The Harp has earned a place at the alter ... So lets check in here, in the Temple.
Lets promote the advancement of our instrument and promote each other. I live in Humboldt County Ca.

Hey HarpHawg - welcome aboard!

Wow, the harp... I must say I am impressed. You're the first person I have met (virtually or in person) who plays the harp. I'm even more surprised to see a harp player for the blues... I would have thought classical for sure.

Everything I have heard is that the harp is one of the hardest instruments to play - or at least to learn to play.

Are you playing professionally or just on the side??

OOPS.

OK, sorry, no, have never heard mouthharp used as expression for harmonica (my own ignorance, sorry, hehehe)

Thought it was kinda weird, a HARP (the 7 foot high kind) in a blues way...

Just wondering

The one with the slide or switch that I believe your reffering to is called a Chromatic
The ones I use most are called Diatonic

Basic difference is those are scales for me to explain further would be quite lenthy and bore some however feel free to contact me off board at Drdopeless@aol.com or HarpHawg@aol.com and I will see that you get the info you seek
Please write (Questions from the Temple) or something like that in subject area so ya don't get tossed by mistake

To hear the differences between chromatic and diatonic harps take a listen to somebody like Big Walter blow the diatonic or straight-12-hole harp. Then take a listen to George "Harmonica" Smith, former Muddy Waters sideman and perhaps the ultimate master on the chromatic. There is a distinct difference in clarity and number of notes that can be attained. Other masters of the chromatic are Rod Piazza, Paul deLay, William Clarke and Mark Hummel, though all can play either instrument. Seems to be very popular amongst West Coast players, who had major impact from George Smith's style.

Ok I think I have this posting thing figured out. Chicago traditional Blues is my interest. Big Walter is my hero. Tounge Blocking is the technique to master. Flisko Harps are a gift from the heavens.

Talk to me

Hey Momboed, If you are a fan of Big Walter's, check out the article I wrote for the Blues Notes newspaper in Portland. You may have seen this before, it has been posted on several blues sites since, including John Irving "Once and Future Blues" and Bob Corritore's Rhythm Room site from Phoenix. It can be found at cascadeblues.org under the subtitle "Blues in History." It includes a number of quotes from people who knew Big Walter and a couple of dynamite photos by the late, great Chicago photographer D. Shigley. Let me know what you think.

HarpHawg...

Hmm Steve Baker; He works mainly on the scene in Europe (UK),... he has played live with Louisana Red and countless others. Definitely a harp hero, someone told me once that he actually consults for Hohner (not sure if that's true.)

Cheers,
