As a writer for our local blues paper, I hear a lot of new material that is sent to our office. I was wondering what new recordings has everyone been listening to that really excites them?

Myself, I've got to say the newest recording by Kenny "Blue" Ray, "Soulful Blues" (Tone King Records) is a definite winner. He is joined throughout the recording by the wonderful vocalist Jackie Payne and these two just simply cook throughout. Not a bad number to be found and covering a wide spectrum of songwriters: from Albert Collins to T-Bone Walker, Jimi Hendrix to Albert King. Kenny's guitar work is minimal and truly effective, hitting the solos in just the right places and backed by a strong horn section. Check this one out for sure. I received the CD about three weeks ago now and have had a hard time finding time to play anything else, I enjoy it that much!

I think LowEnd was mentioning that the new SRV CD/DVD compilation had a lot of previously unreleased tracks. Most of them were live versions of studio tracks. He also said something about a skipping / framedrop problem on the DVD, although that might be a scratch.

I plan on buying this compilation, unless I hear negative comments about it here, and will post a full review!

Double Trouble (formaly of SRV) released a new album. It features many of the top blues artist including i believe Johnny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepard. I haven't checked it out yet but with artists like that it should be good... -woodstock

Slim,

Not real new but King Ernest 'Blues Got Soul' has spent a ton of time in my player over the last few months. What a shame he passed before its release.

Do you think the Grammy judges ever really hear the music??

RCBfan,

It's hard to say in the case of King Ernest. He came out on the Fat Possum label that usually ignores this soulful type of music, so I'm not sure what kind of attention it'll receive.

King Ernest was another of those under-appreciated artists that should've been widely renowned. Great vocals and a fantastic live performer. I saw him play twice at the Waterfront Blues Festival and was completely awed by him both times. I'm sitting here looking at a picture of Ernest and myself hanging on my wall as I type this.

He's somebody that I'll truly miss.

I recently had the great pleasure of hearing a band out of Italy called Family Style. They have an excellent vocalist and harp player named Franco Limido. Lonnie Brooks is my favorite, but these guys are gaining fast! They do a few covers but mostly their own original music. Check them out and see what you think. The lyrics are all sung in English.

One bit of advice... bring along your dancing shoes!

For all you blues-rock guitar-slingers out there, pick up Alligator Records' latest installments of the Deluxe Edition series. There's some hellacious pickin' and slidin' goin' on here as two of the meanest guitarists ever are featured: Johnny Winter and Roy Buchanan!! Certainly guaranteed to set your blood to pumpin'!!
