Anybody planning on attneding the Blues First convention and International Blues Challenge in Memphis this weekend? Our good friend Peter Dammann from the Paul deLay Band is accepting a Keeping the Blues Alive award there for his booking the Waterfront Blues Festival acts, plus we're sending the band Junkyard Jane to compete in the IBC. Anybody else know anyone winning a KBA or sending a band to the competition? Slim

Hi Slim! Just checked out the IBC results... sounds like an excellent event. Noticed the finalist entry for Junkyard Jane that you sent ... hehe.. they have a cool site (www.junkyardjane.com) ... I really like their track Catcher in the eye. Did you actually attend IBC? Man, I wish I lived closer to the mid/south US. Not that we don't have a good music (and blues) scene around here, but it just seems like it's always happening somewhere else... eBuddha

I didn't attend the IBC, but we had a representative along with Junkyard Jane who kept me posted. They felt they were already winners just having the chance to play on Beale Street. Also heard they did a national broadcast today out of Kentucky, but have forgotten the name of the show that I was told. We had a lot of people gripe about Junkyard Jane when they won our local competition, that they did not really consider them to be blues. I simply pointed out that the Blues Foundation themselves state that many people have many different opinions about what classifies as blues. JJ has plenty of funk, R&B and musical qualities that places them squarely in the midst of a newer sounding blues. Congratulations to the band for placing in the finals, competing amongst many of the best unsigned bands to be found anywhere. They are certainly deserving as each of them are wonderful people and great players.Don't know if ya noticed, but our man Peter Dammann was also selected to be one of the judges. All the judges appeared to be super choices, covering a broad spectrum of blues tastes. The Foundation always does a great job producing these events. Many kudos to them. We feel honored at the Cascade Blues Association to have had two great representations in two years running back in Memphis. Last year, our entry in the Blues Kids competition, David Jacobs-Strain placed second overall. Slim

I concur - my personal musical tastes span the entire range, from blues to rock to rap to classical and jazz.. but I've always been impressed by innovative musicians. When an artist adds their own personal flavour to a tried and tested sound, it is a risk - but as in life, no risk - no reward No, did not know about P. Damann (sp)... but I have read quite a few of your writings over at your CBA website. Your writing is both informative and entertaining. cheers, eBuddha

Thanks for your comments about my articles on the web-site.Peter Dammann is the lead guitarist for the Paul deLay Band. Originally from Chicago, he's been with Paul for a number of years and lays down some nice licks. He spends an enormous amount of time booking the Waterfront Blues Festival acts, and occasionally has even responded to some of my suggestions. I help produce a show called the Willamette Delta Showcase in Portland and Peter hired a few acts we originally contacted for us last year, but weren't able to take on ourselves. The Willamette Delta Showcase is really a fun event, too. I brought in Hans Olson from Phoenix last year to open the 1st show, with Paul Rishell & Annie Raines supporting and Smokey Wilson headlining. This year's show takes place on March 10th in Portland and we are showcasing guitar-slinger Sean Chambers, elder bluesman O.C. Thomas making his onstage debut though he has appeared on CD, former Muddy Waters harp master Paul Oscher and the legendary Hubert Sumlin as our headliner. I'm really excited for this event and proud to be the creator behind it. Along with my writings and participation in numerous events, it led me to win the coveted Back What You Believe In Muddy Award last year from the Cascade Blues Association which is given as the highest honor to a non-musician. I'm still humbled by this. Slim [ February 07, 2001: Message edited by: Slim Lively ]
