It is surely a sad day for the world of blues. The great guitarist and researcher John Fahey died in Salem, Oregon after heart bypass surgery. Without the roamings of Mr. Fahey throughout the Delta in the early 1960s, we may have never seen the return of blues heroes like Skip James or Bukka White.

So Blind Joe Death finally caught up with John. A true musicians musician, and one who understood that in the blues one can often say more by omitting notes than by squeezing as many into 12 bars as possible.

I think John's true gift was not in "un-earthing" delta legends, but in fusing their styles with his own.

Not to mention that he formed the Takoma label to offer an outlet for like-minded guitarists like Leo Kottke. He also helped develop the career of Terry Robb by allowing him to produce his Rounder recordings and having the young Terry play alongside. If you're not familiar with Terry Robb, check out his Burnside CDs; he's one helluva fine ragtime and blues musician.

Player, researcher, writer, producer . . . John Fahey could do it all. Godspeed John, you'll be missed.

A memorial service was held in Salem today for John Fahey. His good friend and protege Terry Robb delivered the eulogy.
