It seems to me that a lot is said in this community about Stevie Ray Vaughan, but what do you think about the artists that are continuing the legacy of SRV and other great Texas musicians no longer with us like Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland?

Johnny Winter is still around but doesn't appear to be in the best of health.

I caught Smokin' Joe Kubek and B'Nois King the other night (in fact I had the pleasure of announcing the show). They put on a ferocious evening of straight-ahead blues-rock twin guitars that just would not quit. One song right after another, the only pause they took during their two lengthy sets were to introduce the band.

Another great line-up putting it out from the Lone Star State is Anson Funderburg & the Rockets with Sam Myers (hey, I introduced these guys last time they were here, too). There's a reason why they keep getting nominated for WC Handy awards as best live act.

The Texas scene is alive and well. Let me know who you're listening to from that region. Jimmie Vaughan? Gatemouth Brown? Texas Johnny Brown? Joe Guitar Hughes? Guy Forsyth? . . .

Hey Slim, I was lucky enough to see Clapton at RAH Feb.10th Doyle Bramhall 2 and SmokeStack opened for him. I thought he put on a good show and for a pretty tough crowd.
He's also on a couple tracks from the new Double Trouble CD. He's a decent writer too. Another Texas guy I love's Johnny Guitar Watson (I'd take him over Chuck Berry but don't tell anyone) Watson was a big influence on J. Vaughan as well.

Hi Steady - speaking of that new Double Trouble release, how is it? Worth a listen or buying?

Doesn't surprise me at all about Doyle. He was one of the original bluesmen in Austin during the '70s, worked with Stevie Ray Vaughan in Texas Storm. Wrote a few songs for Stevie's albums later, too, so it makes sense for his association with Double Trouble.

As for Johnny "Guitar" Watson, what can be said about one of the classiest Texas blues guitarists ever. Man, this guy had soul and funk in unheard of quantities. The Real Gangster of Love!!

Oops. My mistake. Just reread your message and saw that you were talking about Doyle II. Even still, the son had to have exposure to the Vaughans and Austin elite as well.
